Browse Programs Admission InformationThe Master's program in Language Sciences primarily focuses on the study of language practices in various fields of language sciences, such as sociolinguistics, acquisition linguistics, the psychology of language, discourse analysis, pragmatics, semiotics, and more.
It also offers a multidisciplinary approach that integrates language sciences with other disciplines in the humanities, such as literature, sociology, and history, through the practical study of diverse corpora.
This Master's program aims to provide students with essential knowledge, enabling them to develop a solid and appropriate understanding of all scientific areas of language. The goal is to better understand and theorize language through the analysis of social practices, thereby developing communicative skills in French that will allow them to master both spoken and written French.
This teaching program also aims to gradually familiarize the student with textual theories and to take charge of their intellectual and professional training in the field of in-depth scientific research on the French language.
The subjects taught during this Master's program are divided into four categories:
a- Core Units
b- Methodological Units
c- Discovery Units
d- Interdisciplinary Units
In this sense, the core modules are those taught in lectures/tutorials and have significant weighting: These include discourse analysis, enunciation and pragmatics, semiotic studies, syntax and discourse,
Given that this program is based on a gradual and progressive acquisition of knowledge, the aforementioned foundational modules serve as a preparatory phase for these advanced specialist modules. These modules are: applied linguistics, semantics/lexicology and lexicography, rhetoric of genres, syntax and discourse, language contact, and systems of linguistic variation.
Admission to the Master's program in Language Sciences is open to all holders of a Bachelor's degree in French, whether under the LMD (Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorate) system or the traditional system (old system). Applications are reviewed by the admissions team, which includes the heads of specializations within the Department of French Language and Literature, the department head and deputy department heads, as well as the program director and the head of the relevant field of study.
The admissions team will rank applicants based on merit, according to their grade point averages throughout their undergraduate studies.
The ranking criteria are as follows:
- Overall average over the three or four years, depending on the type of degree obtained.
- Completion of all core units over the six (6) or eight (8) semesters.
