Djilali Liabès University was established on August 1, 1989, by Decree No. 89-41 dated 01/08/1989 and was later modified and supplemented by Executive Decree No. 95-208 dated 08/05/1995.

The University of Sidi Bel Abbès obtained the status of a university in 1989 after having been a university center that began its activities in 1978. The university has various branches distributed in a ring around the city.

Currently, the university consists of nine faculties, one institute, and fifty-seven research laboratories accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The number of university employees is currently estimated at approximately 1,265, including both contractual and permanent staff.

The university is known for the quality and competence of its teaching staff, numbering around 1,875, who teach in various fields to approximately 29,629 students.
