Orthophony is a field of specialization concerned with the assessment and treatment of language and communication disorders. It has had a distinct history, influenced by several factors. It is a specialty that addresses the functional and fundamental aspect of language, namely communication, a utilitarian aspect determined by an individual's use of language.
The field of orthophony is considered the basis for this, as it is the scientific study of linguistic and non-linguistic communication in its various normal and pathological forms. It aims to address communication problems in general, and language and speech disorders in particular, in both children and adolescents and adults alike. It is also concerned with how language is acquired and the factors involved in this, and plays a role in predicting and preventing language disorders. This is done according to two important and basic processes: first, explaining the disorder, which is done by defining the concept of the disorder that we arrive at through diagnosis, then determining the pronostic prediction, through which we determine the duration of care. Second, the theory of treatment. After understanding the pathological phenomenon that we want to study, comes this stage, which is the stage of practicing treatment (re-education)
