Presentation of the National High School of Forests - Khenshela

The agricultural orientation of Khenshela Province, its tourist nature, and the diversity of its vegetation cover, along with the presence of internationally classified areas, make it an ideal location for hosting this scientific institution. Forests in Khenshela Province cover 15% of the national territory, with an area estimated at 146.30 hectares, mainly composed of Aleppo pine and Atlantic pine, which are the dominant species, covering an area of 42,000 hectares.

Local development in Khenshela Province relies on the renewal and protection of forest resources, with a particular focus on fruit tree cultivation, especially apple production, which could provide a strong boost to the food industry. Olive tree cultivation on large areas is also encouraged to develop the olive oil production sector.

Khenshela’s forests are also a valuable resource for the tourism sector, offering great opportunities for recreation and relaxation.

The National High School of Forests (ENSF) is a public institution with scientific, cultural, and professional orientation, created by Executive Decree No. 20-167 on June 27, 2020. It opened its doors in June 2020 and is located in Khenshela, on the road to Hammam Salhine. It serves as a center of excellence for higher education, contributing to the development and enhancement of national scientific and technological research, particularly in the field of forest and wildlife protection.

Key Requirements

System and Duration of Training:

The National High School of Forests (ENSF), like other higher education institutions, offers specialized higher education training lasting 5 years. Upon completion, students receive a State Engineer degree, and for those interested, a Master’s degree after an additional 200 hours of training. Furthermore, the school offers post-graduate training for obtaining a Ph.D.

To obtain the State Engineer degree, the training at the school is divided into two cycles:

  1. First Cycle: Preparatory Cycle (2 years)
  2. This is a foundational course, also known as the preparatory phase, which focuses on basic knowledge in the fields of natural sciences and life sciences. This cycle ends with an entrance exam for the second cycle to guarantee the specialization according to the student's preference. (For the organization of the exam: see Decree 370 dated March 20, 2024, which outlines the procedures for organizing the entrance exam for the second cycle of higher schools).
  3. Second Cycle: Specialization Cycle (3 years)
  4. This is the most important cycle, as it corresponds to the student’s desired specialization. This cycle concludes with the awarding of the State Engineer degree, which enables entry into the professional world, as well as a Master’s degree, which allows the student to pursue a Ph.D. (third cycle) if desired.

Third Cycle: Post-graduate Training

This cycle allows the student to obtain a Ph.D. in a specific field, lasting 3 years.

Conditions for Admission and Orientation to the School:

  1. Admission to the Preparatory Cycle:
  2. Admission to the first cycle (preparatory cycle) of the school is possible after obtaining a high school diploma (Baccalaureate) in scientific and technological streams, experimental sciences, or mathematics. Admission is based on ranking according to the weighted average, which must be equal to or greater than 13/20.
  3. Admission to the Specialization Cycle:
  4. Admission to the specialization cycle requires passing a national competition organized annually, distributed as follows:
  • 80% of the places are awarded based on the Baccalaureate diploma.
  • 20% of the remaining places are awarded through a written exam.
  1. Admission to the Doctoral Cycle:
  2. Admission to the doctoral cycle is based on a national competition for all Master’s degree holders, according to the requested specializations. Results are published after approval by scientific committees, and the participation and organization conditions are defined by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Applications are submitted through the PROGRES platform.
