Program Overview

The PhD program in Applied Biochemistry is designed to train researchers specializing in the exploitation of agricultural waste to produce bioactive metabolites and biochar, while integrating circular agriculture principles. The program aims to improve plant growth, resistance to stress, and the nutritional quality of crops. It also enriches food with beneficial compounds and optimizes nutrient availability through bioactive extracts and biochar.

Curriculum Highlights

Core Courses

  1. Biochemistry of Secondary Metabolites: Analyze plant secondary metabolites (antioxidants, essential oils, flavonoids, etc.), their role in responding to environmental stress, and their impact on the nutritional quality of crops.
  2. Applied Biotechnology in Agricultural Waste Exploitation: Acquire the necessary skills to apply biotechnology technologies in the exploitation of agricultural waste
  3. Research Methodology: This course aims to provide students with the tools needed to design, plan, and conduct scientific research in a rigorous and systematic manner.
  4. Molecular Docking and In Silico Study: Introduce students to the principles of molecular docking to simulate interactions between ligands, such as bioactive metabolites and biochar, and biological targets in a virtual environment.

Advanced Topics

  1. Optimization of biochar production from agricultural waste and its effects on soil and crop nutritional quality.
  2. Applications of bioactive metabolites in sustainable agriculture and the improvement of crop nutritional quality.
  3. Interactions between biochar and bioactive metabolites in managing environmental stress and improving the nutritional quality of food.
  4. Biotechnology and sustainable management of agricultural waste to enhance the nutritional quality of crops.
