Browse Programs Admission InformationThe medical program at the University of Laghouat lasts seven years, divided into three cycles. The first cycle is pre-clinical, lasting three years (First, Second, and Third Year), including a hospital immersion year and theoretical training in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, and other foundational subjects. The clinical cycle, lasting three years (Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Year), focuses on specialized modules covering various systems of the human body, such as cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and more. The seventh year is dedicated to an internship, where students complete practical rotations in areas such as general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics-gynecology. To progress to the next year, students must achieve an annual average of 10/20 until the third year, and successfully complete clinical modules from the fourth year onward. Earning the Doctor of Medicine degree requires the validation of all seven years of study, including the defense of a thesis.
1st Year Medicine:
Courses in the first year of medicine include anatomy, biochemistry, physics-biophysics, biostatistics and informatics, cytology, chemistry, embryology, histology, general physiology, and health, society, and humanity. Languages taught are English and French.
2nd Year Medicine:
In the second year, students study modules on the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine and reproductive systems, as well as the nervous system and sensory organs. Additional modules include genetics, fundamental immunology, and other aspects of the body systems.
3rd Year Medicine:
The third year includes units on medical psychology, general semiology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, musculoskeletal and skin systems, pathological anatomy and cytology, immunology, endocrine and urinary systems, digestive system, medical microbiology, parasitology, mycology, and clinical pharmacology.
4th Year Medicine:
In the fourth year, students tackle modules such as cardiovascular and respiratory systems, hepatogastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, and onco-hematology.
5th Year Medicine:
The fifth year covers modules on the musculoskeletal system, gynecology-obstetrics, pediatrics, mental health, endocrinology, metabolic diseases, and urology-nephrology.
6th Year Medicine:
The sixth-year courses include emergency medicine, medical law, and medical ethics, geriatric care, systemic diseases, dermatology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), ophthalmology, occupational health, and environmental health, as well as modules in epidemiology, research methodology, article critical reading, and public health.
7th Year Medicine (Internship):
The seventh year consists of practical internships in medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and gynecology-obstetrics.
The advanced topics in the medical program at the University of Laghouat cover specialized and in-depth areas of study. In the fourth year, students focus on complex modules such as cardiovascular diseases, neurology, infectious diseases, onco-hematology, and pediatrics, with a particular emphasis on advanced diagnostic techniques and cutting-edge treatments. The fifth year includes in-depth modules on mental health, gynecology-obstetrics, endocrinology, metabolic diseases, as well as advanced pediatrics and urology. In the sixth year, students study emergency medicine, forensic medicine, and care for the elderly, and explore specialized areas such as dermatology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), ophthalmology, and occupational health. Advanced topics also include modules in epidemiology, public health, and research methodology, allowing students to develop skills in medical research and health policy analysis. Students are trained to solve complex cases and apply innovative treatments in clinical settings.
