Browse Programs Admission InformationThe specialization “History of the Algerian Resistance and the National Movement” is considered one of the most important university programs that focuses on studying and understanding a crucial period in Algerian history, namely the period following occupation and colonial penetration up to Algeria’s independence in 1962.
This specialization sheds light on the political, economic, social, and cultural history of colonized Algeria, as well as the process of attaining freedom and independence through political and armed struggle after the outbreak of the Revolution, which had a significant impact on the growth of national consciousness among oppressed colonized peoples in Africa and Asia.
Core Elements of the Curriculum
a) Main Program Axes:
Political History: This axis examines the political activity of parties, the role of deputies and newspapers published during this period, the outbreak of the Revolution, its stages, diplomatic work, and the most important political and military victories achieved by the Revolution.
Economic and Social History: This axis focuses on the economic and social situation of Algeria between 1830 and 1962, including the agrarian question, major colonial settlement projects and agricultural laws issued by the French administration, the position of the national movement and the Revolution toward these projects, and the main sociological and demographic challenges of Algeria during the studied period.
Cultural and Intellectual History: This axis addresses cultural activity, such as free and official religious sermons and the cultural role of the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars, highlighting the spiritual aspect of the Revolution.
Research Methodologies: This axis includes training students in modern research methodologies in the study of contemporary Algerian history, including critical analysis of historical sources and academic writing skills.
b) Courses of the Specialization:
Core Courses: These include courses related to the political, economic, social, and cultural history of Algeria (1830–1962), as well as an introduction to historical sources and research methodologies in the history of the Algerian resistance and national movement.
Elective Courses: The program allows students to choose a set of elective courses covering diverse topics.
Graduation Thesis: Writing a specialized research project in one of the fields of the history of resistance and the national movement (1830–1962), enabling students to apply the research and analytical skills acquired during their studies.
