Presentation of the National School of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management:
The National School of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management (ENSSMAL) is a training and research institution in the fields of oceanography, coastal management, and coastal zone development. It is located in the heart of an exceptional university environment, the large university campus of Dély Ibrahim, which includes the University of Algiers, the University of Continuing Education, university dormitories, and more.
The creation of ENSSMAL (formerly ISMAL) by Executive Decree No. 08-221 of July 14, 2008, marks the culmination of a long process in the training and research of oceanography in Algeria.
Description of the Training Programs at the National School of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management:
The National School of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management (ENSSMAL) is a multidisciplinary institution in the field of marine and coastal sciences, with activities centered around three main missions: academic training, scientific and technical research, and observation and monitoring. It offers interdisciplinary training programs at the undergraduate (Engineering/Master’s) and postgraduate (Doctorate) levels.
ENSSMAL is a multidisciplinary institution whose objectives are to increase knowledge of the marine world, study and observe the interactions between the marine world, the atmosphere, and continental spaces, train researchers and professionals in these fields, and contribute to the observation of changes in the environment, whether natural or human-induced.
With quality supervision, innovative training and research programs, and strong links with the national socio-economic sector and international partners, ENSSMAL positions itself as a key player in its field. Its high-performance laboratories, top-level training, and international openness are the pillars of its success.
The institution offers six academic and research specializations that combine expertise in natural sciences (ecology, geochemistry, biology, geology), social sciences (geography, law, economics, etc.), and technological sciences (physics, geotechnics, coastal engineering, wastewater treatment, etc.). This interdisciplinary approach addresses the new professional requirements that lie at the intersection of these various fields.
The training programs are organized into 3 fields, 3 pathways, and 6 specializations:
Apply online, submit required documents, and meet language proficiency requirements.

Registration for the integrated and specific preparatory cycle at ENSSMAL is open to holders of the baccalaureate (Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Techniques) or an equivalent recognized diploma. The admission requirements are defined in the ministerial circular related to the pre-registration and orientation of baccalaureate holders for the upcoming academic year.
After the preparatory cycle, students are directed, through a competitive examination, to one of ENSSMAL's specializations.
Scientific Club of the National School of Marine Sciences and Coastal developement
1. ORCA Scientific Club (formerly CEENSSMAL): 275 members, the first and oldest scientific, cultural, and sports club, founded in 2006 and reaccredited on December 1, 2021, at the National School of Marine Sciences.
2. AOcean Scientific Club: 40 members, founded on March 12, 2023, the second scientific and cultural club at the National School of Marine Sciences, aiming to showcase cultural talents, develop skills, and support student training.
3. TIC TALK Science Club: 40 members, established on May 9, 2023, a science and cultural club, whose goal is to improve communication among students by providing opportunities for students to practice the English language with others with the same level of language skills through scientific or cultural events and activities on marine sciences, and by creating podcasts and video clips in English. The club also motivates students to develop their self-confidence and public speaking skills
