Program Overview

The doctoral program “Architecture and Identity in Algeria: Memory, Domesticity and Cultural Mediation”, which lasts six semesters, two of which are devoted to theoretical and practical teaching, offers an interdisciplinary approach that crosses architectural history, research methodology, urbanization and heritage. Its aim is to provide doctoral students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to critically analyze the links between geographical identity and built space. The first semester is devoted to preparing a thesis project, historical research on Algerian architecture and the examination of architectural forms as cultural manifestations. The second semester focuses on heritage policies, cultural mediation through contemporary architecture and the experience of the territory, through two internships (the Department of Urban Planning, Architecture and Construction and the Department of Culture). The aim is to train researchers capable of taking part in informed heritage debates and helping them to evolve.
